The Dorrit Hoffleit Undergraduate Astronomy Research Fellowship at Yale is named in honor of Dr. E. Dorrit Hoffleit, a distinguished senior research astronomer who dedicated nearly fifty years to Yale’s astronomy department. For over two decades, she directed summer programs for hundreds of students at the Maria Mitchell Observatory on Nantucket Island, many of whom later built successful careers in astronomy. She co-authored The General Catalogue of Trigonometric Stellar Parallaxes and wrote the Bright Star Catalogue. In 1988, the American Astronomical Society awarded her the George Van Biesbroeck Prize in recognition of her lifelong contributions to the field of astronomy.

Students from all countries are eligible to apply for the fully funded Yale University Dorrit Hoffleit Summer Fellowship 2026 in the USA. This eight-week program will be held in June or July 2026 and offers participants the opportunity to work as astronomy researchers at Yale during the summer.
