LawAI Summer Research Fellowship 2026 for International Students
Applications are open for the LawAI Summer Research Fellowship 2026 in the United States. International applicants from any country are eligible to apply. The fellowship will run remotely for ten weeks, beginning on June 15 and ending on August 21. It also includes a one-week in-person session from June 22 to June 26, which will be held either in Berkeley, California, or Washington, D.C.
Candidates from all countries can apply for the fully funded LawAI Summer Fellowship in the USA for 2026. This paid summer fellowship, offered by the Institute for Law & AI (LawAI), allows law students, professionals, and researchers to explore topics related to AI law and policy. Eligibility Criteria
In order to be considered for the LawAI Summer Research Fellowship 2026 in the USA (Fully Funded), students must:
- All Nationals are eligible for the Fellowship in the USA.
- Candidates should be well-versed in the legal precepts that govern AI regulation under US law and policy.
- Prior experience or expertise in AI-specific research is not necessary, but candidates should be interested in AI law and policy and ready to apply their research skills and legal knowledge to issues in our field.
- Among the previous Summer Research Fellows were:
- PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate law students (such as those pursuing an LLM or JD)
- Professionals in different stages of their careers who want to move into AI-related positions in industry, government, academia, or research
- Legal scholars
- Able to work remotely full-time between June 15 and August 21.
- Although we strongly encourage full participation, we may consider changing the fellowship’s start or conclusion dates under extraordinary situations.
- The ability to participate in the in-person week from June 22 to June 26 in Washington, D.C. or Berkeley, CA, with reimbursement for all qualified travel costs, including lodging, meals, and airfare.
- We will do all in our power to assist with visa sponsorship if you obtain an offer.
- However, the candidate and their location affect our ability to do so, and eligibility is eventually decided by the appropriate authorities.

How to Apply for the LawAI Summer Research Fellowship?
- Fill out the application; it should take about 20 minutes. We won’t be able to evaluate late applications.
- Asynchronous exploratory interview (30 minutes): We hope to learn more about your viewpoint on AI development and its effects on society, law, and policy through this interview.
- A member of our research team will talk with you about your goals, interests, and program fit. Additionally, you will have the chance to ask us questions.
- By mid-March, we hope to have a final decision for each application. Please indicate on your application form if you require a decision by a specific date.
