The Korean government prioritized national industrialization in the 1970s. As part of its Economic Development Plan, the government intended to establish an academic institution with a focus on science and technology. Korea’s first research-focused graduate school was founded in 1971 to aid in the country’s industrialization. In addition to limiting the brain drain of Korean scientists and engineers, the graduate school sought to develop exceptional talent in science and technology. KAIST began as the first research-focused graduate school in Korea and has since grown to become one of the world’s top academic institutions for science and technology. Must check Ocean Leaders Fellowship 2026 in Kenya (Fully Funded).
