The Australian Research Council Future Fellowships scheme aims to:

  • Assist exceptional mid-career researchers with demonstrated capacity for high-quality research, leadership, research training, and mentorship;
    Encourage outstanding mid-career researchers to conduct good basic and applied research so that institutions can recruit and keep them in ongoing academic jobs;
  • Encourage national and international scientific collaboration.
  • Support great and innovative research that tackles a substantial problem while providing value for money;
  • Provide new or enhanced knowledge as a result of research findings that have economic, commercial, environmental, social, and/or cultural advantages for Australia, as well as increase the scale and emphasis of research in Australian Government priority areas.

In order to be considered for the Australian Research Council Future Fellowships 2026, applicants must:

  • A past recipient, or an individual who has been recommended for a Future Fellowship on three previous occasions, is not allowed to apply for another Future Fellowship.
  • Applications that are withdrawn or disqualified fall under this category.
  • A PhD award date on or between March 1, 2011, and March 1, 2021, or
  • A PhD award date with an acceptable period of career interruptions equivalent to an award date on or between March 1, 2011, and March 1, 2021, is a prerequisite for eligibility.
  • The ARC website’s Eligibility and Career Interruptions Statement and Instructions to Applications both outline the permitted career interruptions and the time frame for each.
  • When the grant opportunity closes, applicants for Future Fellowships are not required to fulfill the project limit conditions.
  • Before the project may begin, designated participants must fulfill the project constraints if their application for a Future Fellowship is accepted.
  • Project limitations can be reached by withdrawing applications that would go beyond the project limits, giving up roles on ongoing projects, or giving up current active projects. This might wait till all applications are made public.

The last date to apply for the Australian Research Council Future Fellowships 2026 for international students is 5th November 2025.

  1. The administering university requires applications to be filed electronically via the ARC Research Management System (RMS).
  2. Prior to the final submission, prospective applicants must arrange for internal review with the Research Office of their school.
  3. It is necessary to register for RMS, and new users can do so using the ARC RMS site.
